Wick's Flags Fly at Rally Day
Wick enjoyed great success at the YFC Annual County Rally Day, the pinnacle of the YFC calendar on Saturday at Tythegston Farm. Leading the way was our Club’s Scrapbook gaining 95 out of 100 points and giving Alisha Major (15) her first win of the day, the book bulged with a look back over the Club’s year giving an insight into Wick’s fun filled activities, great camaraderie and helped demonstrate the incredible opportunities offered within young farmers for 10-26 year olds. Hollie Jones (13) continued the Club’s winning formula with a thoroughly deserved 1st in the Wool Handling competition, a competition filled with excitement and extreme adrenalin. Adding to this success Tom Edwards & Tom Nayler secured a 1st in the Boys Bricklaying Competition building a wall with a right-angled corner to set measurements. Alisha furthered her winning streak in the Commemorative Craft Competition having created an RAF Teddy Bear in full uniform to celebrate the 100 years of the RAF. Both Hollie & Alisha now go forward to represent County at the Welsh finals at this year’s Royal Welsh Show. Very Well Done Team & Best of Luck for July!
Success continued for Wick, as the sun radiated down upon us, Rhianna Jones (11) and her sister Hollie accompanied by Alisha achieved 2nd place in the Design a Kite Competition having created a most beautiful design of a Welsh lamb surrounded by flowers and trailing ribbons. The Jones’ girls artistic talents were certainly on top form. Up next was Promote Your Club achieving a further 2nd for us. The team comprised of Alisha, Hollie & Tanya Bhanaut as they re-enacted their favourite trips of the year Wet n’Wild & Jump Jam accompanied on stage by a ginormous inflatable white swan and mini trampoline set to music Surfing USA & Cotton Eye Joe. Not done yet the girls costumes included Tanya as a Jurassic Dinosaur to represent Wick as the oldest YFC Club in Wales, Alisha donning an inflatable bull costume and Hollie in a Hawaiian dress. Certainly a moment to remember as the girls spoke of the Club’s great support mechanism, team building exercises, fun packed activities and how with Wick each and every member has a voice and a say in what we do.
Next up was our Dance team comprising of our Chairman James Morgan, Alex Edwards, Evan Thomas, Katie Evans, Catrin Long and Victoria Powell. They performed 2 dance routines, the first set in the 1920’s and the 2nd as cowboys/girls line dancing. They had great audience participation and put on a most spectacular display constantly changing pace and rhythm earning Wick yet another 2nd place. The Girls Bricklaying followed at a slightly more sedate pace with Rose Lubin & Catrin Long achieving yet another 2nd.
Rhianna continued her incredible artwork with a 3rd in the Craft competition having illustrated a most delightful book on 100 years since women got the vote. Well Done Rhianna!
Tom Edwards and Evan achieved 3rd in the Woodwork Competition having created a very sturdy and extremely inviting see saw for a Children’s playground. It’s the boys last year competing in YFC this year, they’ve been incredible members over the last 15 years but depart with a most spectacular array of successes and well wishes from us all.
Not done yet! Rose, Hollie and Isobel Roberts achieved 4th in the Cooking Competition to a theme of Magic & Mystery. They created a most charismatic display set in Fairy Land with a menu containing Elf Brain Cocktail, Fairy Garden Risotto, Toadstool Cheesecake and finished off with a Fairy Shot.
Further placing came for the Club’s Federation Display, Del’s Minute Book & Tractor Handling with James Morgan, Tom Nayler, Luke Holmes & Annie Evans.
It was an exceptionally busy day, incredibly well organised by Gwyneth Thomas & the team from County yet again and what an absolute pleasure to have members of the RAF judging many of the competitions given the “Up Above” theme this year celebrating the 100 years of the Royal Air Force. Many thanks also to Richard & Lynwen Anthony of Tythegston Farm for acting as hosts for the second year in a row. A most incredible day, packed with fun, excitement but best of all demonstrating the great camaraderie between the competing YFC Clubs and the enormous opportunities & confidence building YFC offers its members.
The day ended with the Club’s battling it out in their annual Wet n’Wild event which descended into a most spectacular display of utter mayhem and a rather wet looking bunch of young farmers. Enormous fun was had by all and a super end to a most incredible day.
