Field Day Success
Wick YFC achieved great success at Glamorgan County Field Day at Penllyn Estate on Saturday, 7th April, 2018. Leading the way with first place in the Senior Fencing Competition & winners of the Ashdown Fencing Ltd Shield were Evan Thomas and Alex & Tom Edwards. The boys had to erect a stock proof boundary fence with an adjoining style at one end. Yet again this year, they’ve excelled for Wick not only winning this prestigious competition with their expertise and precision but also thoroughly entertaining the spectators whilst doing so.
Our junior team consisting of Luke Holmes, Tom Naylor and Rory Vizard came a very close 3rd in the Junior Fencing Competition in what was a highly competitive field again erecting a stock proof fence but with a join in the netting. This was the boys first time working together and they showed enormous promise for the future. Looking good guys!
Success also came for the junior girls team consisting of Alisha Major & Hollie Jones in the Royal Welsh Show Cookery competition achieving a tightly fought 4th place from a field of 10 entries. They were required to prepare a Centenary dinner for two people using a camping stove in one hour. The girls chose to make Typhoon Duck Breast with Bulgur, Plums & Plum Sauce with De Havilland Lemon Cheesecake to follow to celebrate the RAF 100th year. The meal looked absolutely delicious and was served exquisitely on an RAF themed display unit which the girls decorated prior to the event. Thanks to Charlotte Thomas, Club Leader for her unending support throughout practises.
Tom Edwards, Isobel Thomas, Victoria Powell & Hollie Jones made up Wick’s team for YFC Live with Hollie demonstrating the art of skipping. Tom gave a hilarious commentary of Hollie’s demonstration and once again thoroughly captivated those watching with his priceless off-the-cuff remarks earning them a very well deserved 3rd place.
Dell Davies produced a beautiful floral display for the Royal Welsh Flower Arranging competition again to celebrate the RAF Centenary. There was an exceptional standard of entries with Dell creating a charming and artistic pendulum wreath using the RAF red, white and blue from flowers of the season. A stunning display indeed.
Alisha and Hollie also competed in the Fferm Factor event which was a mystery competition in agricultural related tasks. Hollie demonstrated the use of a claw hammer whilst under a timed restraint using as few hits as possible. Alisha had to identify various farm fodder from mystery sacks. This was followed by an agricultural quiz which the girls had great fun completing.
It was a fabulous day with the weather being very kind and even managing some sunshine. It was a pleasure to see the great camaraderie between the competing YFC Clubs with excellent organisation from the County Officers yet again.
