Small yet Mighty at County Rally Day

The County YFC Rally Day Finals were held in the idyllic setting of Gadlys Farm, Glynogwr on Saturday by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Thomas.

As a small Club Wick YFC achieved enormous success with Hollie Jones leading the way in the RWAS Wool Handling Competition.  Hollie now goes on to represent County at the Welsh Finals held at the Royal Welsh Show in July where she will once again compete against former world champions.  Having gained experience at this level last year and performed exceptionally well under the enormous pressures of the competition we look forward to supporting her once again and wish her the very best of luck.  Biting at Hollie’s heels with only 1.7 penalties more was her sister Rhianna who at only 11 years of age thoroughly deserved her 2nd place in her first attempt at the competition.

Hollie also gained 1st place in the County Scrapbook competition with 94% having created a book full to bursting of Club’s activities and adventures over the last year with an abundance of photos, newsletters, newspaper articles and write ups beautifully presented with an exquisite front cover illustration by Rhianna.  The book certainly demonstrated what a wonderful year Wick has had under the superb guidance of Alex Edwards as Chairman and what super experiences we have to offer members between 10 - 26 years old.

Del Davies of Rosedew Farm also had an exceptional day achieving both a 2nd in the Girls Car Maintenance Competition with a staggering 100% before achieving another 2nd working alongside Catrin Long in the Girls Bricklaying competition again attaining joint marks with the winner.  Del continued her successes with 3rd in the Minute Book competition having worked endlessly over the past year as Club’s Minute Secretary.

Alisha Major gained a thoroughly deserved 2nd in the Craft competition having created a most quaint Basset Hound puppet with Rhianna Jones taking 3rd place for her delightful Humpty Dumpty.  Both Alisha and Rhianna were then joined by Hollie and came 2nd in the Capable Campers competition having erected a tent and demonstrated their cooking skills.

Bel Roberts joined forces with both Hollie and Rhianna to gain a very well deserved 2nd place in the NFYFC Cookery competition.  The competition demonstrated 4 courses of rare breeds with the girls choosing Gloucester Old Spot locally sourced from Slade Farm, Bagot Goat and Balwen lamb.  At only 11 years of age Bel has had a super year with us to date having been part of the successful dance team who represented County at the Wales Eisteddfod finals earlier in the year and also as part of the team in the junior public reading competition; she is certainly one to watch for the future.

Club Chairman Alex Edwards lead his team of James Morgan, Luke Morgan and Del Davies to a tightly fought 3rd place in the Tractor/Bale Handling Competition demonstrating much precision and accuracy around the course.

One of the final competitions of the day was the Dressing Up competition where Alisha and Hollie dressed Luke Morgan as Humpty Dumpty having created a 3D costume from scratch within the 1 hour time limit.  The girls came a very close 3rd with only 3 marks between the top 3, we must say Luke made a great entrance on the catwalk much to the audience’s delight.

The day drew to a close with Bel along with her sister Lucy and team mates James and Luke Morgan providing enormous fun and entertainment in the Wet n Wild competition.  The water was carried from one end of the course to the other within the team’s wellies with Lucy establishing a most perfect technique.  It is fair to say all teams completed the course soaked to the core.

Enormous thanks to Gwyneth Thomas, Glamorgan’s County Organiser and her team of officers and stewards who co-ordinated the day to absolute perfection.  Rally Day is the pinnacle of the YFC calendar and represents the incredible array of competitions and skills learned through YFC.  This year did not disappoint, it is fair to say everyone had an absolutely sensational day whether participating or spectating.
