The Good Times Just Keep Rolling for Wick YFC at Public Speaking Day

Our budding juniors performed at the County Public Speaking Day in Pendoylan on 2nd December with Lucy Roberts delivering another most spectacular performance.  The audience fell into total silence as Lucy addressed them with a faultless and intense delivery, both captivating and impassioned; the whole audience was transfixed.  We were delighted to see the competition judged by Lynsey Martin, Chair of the National Federation of Young Farmers.  Lucy now goes on to represent County at the Wales Finals in March.  Very Well Done Lucy!

Alisha Major continued Club’s successes with 3rd in the Junior Member Competition earning a worthy 90% with a highly impressive 10 minute presentation and interview on her year as Club’s PR, competition successes, skills learned as well as the fun & exhilaration of being a member of Wick YFC; all to the judge’s high acclaim.  It was a tightly fought competition with only a few marks separating the top three.

The juniors also competed in the under 26 Braintrust competition consisting of a panel of 3 members plus Chair debating on 3 topics unknown to them until they were seated.  The team consisted of Lauren James (10) as Chair, Hollie Jones (13), Lucy Roberts (15) and Alisha Major (15).  They did an incredible job given their allocated subjects - farm prices, Brexit and whether parents or schools are responsible for teaching children life skills.  Undeterred, the team gave some very knowledgeable opinions despite their young age; Hollie delivering a highly convincing and informed argument on the pricing structure with Alisha countering her argument.  Finishing just outside the top 3, the judge was particularly impressed with Lauren who at 10 years old and chairing a panel for the first time, in her first year as a member, was completely unperturbed by the task in hand with the judge commenting “Lauren controlled the panel excellently and invited the whole audience into the debate”.  He went on to say it was a team of the future which meant a lot to us as a group.  Super job juniors.  Thanks must go to Charlotte Thomas, Club Leader for all her hard work training the debate team in the lead up to the Braintrust competition.

As a Club, we are currently working hard practising for the County Entertainments Competition which will be on 1st - 2nd February, 2019 at The Pavilion, Porthcawl with performances from the 7 clubs in County, it’s promising to be a fantastic 2 nights of entertainment for all the family.   We are looking forward this week to an evening of carol singing by kind invitation of Mr Richard Hubbard, Blaen y Cwm, Monknash in aid of our Chairman’s Charity, Dementia UK as well as a trip to Winter Wonderland in Cardiff.  Live is never dull in Wick YFC.
