Wick YFC Talent Shines at Wales Eisteddfod Finals
The Wales YFC Eisteddfod Finals were hosted by the Glamorgan Federation of Young Farmers this year in Memo Arts Centre, Barry. There was an incredible array of talent from within the 12 Counties of the federation and what a fantastic success it proved with scouts from Britains Got Talent in attendance throughout the day highly impressed and praiseful of the expertise & dexterity within the young farmers movement.
The day ran like clockwork and was an absolute credit to both Wales YFC and Glamorgan YFC. The Eisteddfod chair was designed and created by our very own Mr Tom Edwards recently elected as Club Leader following incredible success as a member of Wick YFC for the last 15 years. I caught up with Tom who was extremely honoured to undertake the project igniting a plethora of ideas from which to work. He took around 45 hours to complete the task and told me “I was going to use local ash but the grain in the piece of elm was so awesome I couldn’t not use it,” looking at the finished article we can see why. The detail was incredible, the seat itself carved with a map of Glamorgan and the back with the three feathers, Wales YFC Eisteddfod and Glamorgan detail. It was an absolute work of art by an incredibly talented craftsman. Tom told me his only real difficulty was getting to the venue in Barry as he got lost in Barry three times in the height of rush hour!
We also enjoyed individual successes on the day from our junior members with Alisha Major gaining 3rd in the Club Promotion leaflet competition and our dance team consisting of Lauren Morgan (10), Hollie Jones (13), her sister Rhianna (11), Lucy Roberts (15) & her sister Bel (11) coming 4th. Despite their young ages the girls choreographed their entire routine on their own with Lauren as head choreographer assisted by Hollie & Rhianna. The routine, a most delightful contemporary dance was set to Skinny Love by Birdy and told the story of the girls alone & isolated at the start of the routine but coming together to work as one as the dance progressed. The story was very apt to us as a club as it’s very much how Wick YFC orchestrates with members supporting each other and pulling together as a unit. The girls competed against many 26 year olds and were delighted to achieve 4th place in what proved to be a nigh on professional contest, the talent within the routines was absolutely incredible.
Lucy Roberts also competed in the U18 Recitation of Dylan Thomas’ “The Hunchback in the Park” which she did with pure perfection and was pitch perfect gaining a very worthy and credible 80 marks finishing just outside the top 3. Very well done Lucy.
Kind acknowledgements of Wick’s efforts came from Miss Laura Elliott, Vice Chair of the National Federation of Young Farmers who stated “Thank you for your help & well done to the Wick YFC members representing Glamorgan so well in their competitions”. This meant so much to us given Laura is one of the most successful former members of the Glamorgan federation and has gone on to represent the young farmers movement so successfully with such professionalism at National level.
Mrs Menna Davies, Comperes within the Eisteddfod also congratulated the Wick team “Well done Wick for representing Glamorgan so well yesterday at the Eisteddfod. Can I also thank all the sterling work that was evident by your members and all county stewards that worked behind the scenes and front of house that definitely helped to create a professional image for Glamorgan YFC.” Comments such as these make all the hard work and effort so worthwhile and we are incredibly humbled to receive such acknowledgement.
