Hollie Jones Reigns Supreme at County Stock Judging Day
The Glamorgan County Finals of Young Farmers Stock Judging were held on Saturday, 19th October at Pentwyn Farm in Skewen by kind permission of the Leyshon family. To members’ delight the rain held off for most of the day and with all 7 clubs vying for the top spot there was strong competition in all four categories of dairy, beef, lambs and pigs. The day was organised to perfection by County Organiser Gwyneth Thomas and her team of officers who yet again excelled within their roles, even the rugby fans among us were catered for with televised coverage of the Rugby World Cup quarter finals, not a stone was left unturned.
Members were required to spend 15 minutes judging a ring of 4 animals before writing up their reasons and giving the judges their opinions within the 2 minute time allocation. Wick had a fantastic day with Lucy Roberts placing 3rd in the U16 veterinary quiz, Sophie Price 3rd in the U21 Pigs and Hollie Jones not only achieving 1st in both beef and lamb U16 categories with a staggering 95% and 96% respectfully but also winning the much coveted U16 Junior Stockman’s Cup. As a small club we were delighted with Hollie’s accolade, the first time in almost 10 years the cup has been won by Wick YFC. Enormous congratulations to Hollie who also recently achieved two 3rds at the County Carcass Finals in both U16 Pork & Lamb. Hollie is off to a flying start again this year having finished last year with enormous successes at the County Rally Day and represented club each day at the Royal Welsh Show in July. At only 14 years of age this is Hollie’s 5th year as a member of Wick YFC, a pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd, Hollie has recently been elected to the role of PR & Promotions looking after social media and writing articles for Club, a role we are sure she will take in her stride.
With the excitement of the day over, the members celebrated their successes at the Stock Judging dance again held by the Leyshon family, it is fair to say they all enjoyed the evening with a few members rolling in just in time to start the next busy day on the farm.
